Interior painting is most of the work: living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, halls, stairs and landings, and the ceilings that show every missed patch of prep. A small job is welcome. So is a house that needs doing from the front door to the back bedroom.

What the job includes

  • Floors, furniture and fittings covered before a tin is opened
  • Holes, cracks and rough patches filled and sanded
  • Stains and bare filler spot-primed so they do not show through the finish
  • Walls and ceilings painted in even coats
  • Doors, frames, skirting and banisters cut in to a clean line
  • The room left tidy at the end of the day

Halls, stairs and landings

This is the part of the house everyone sees, and it is the awkward part: spindles, winders, and the high wall over the stairs. Recent jobs include stairwells with raised panelling painted in cream, stone and navy, and rails taken from bare timber to black or white. If the stairs are part of what you want done, say so when you ask for a quote. It changes the time, and it should be in the price from the start rather than treated as a surprise.

Kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms

The photographs show the sort of interior work Martin has been doing. Kitchens where the walls were painted and a tired splashback shows as white tiles in the finished picture, with the oak units left as they were. Loft bedrooms with a dark feature paper and oak slat panelling. Living rooms where a chimney breast was painted as a plain break between wallpapered walls. Fireplace surrounds painted from timber to a warm white.

If you want the kitchen unit doors themselves painted a new colour, say that clearly. A lot of kitchen decorating is the walls and woodwork around the units, not a respray of the doors. The quote will say what is included.

Colour in a grey climate

Light in Tyrone and Fermanagh is flat for much of the year. A colour that looked bright on a phone often dies on a north-facing wall in Omagh or Enniskillen. If you are unsure, put a sample on the actual wall and look at it in the morning and again in the evening before the whole room is committed.

Matt is the usual choice for walls. A wipeable eggshell or satin is the usual choice for doors, skirting and banisters. Kitchens and bathrooms want a finish that can be cleaned. Going from a dark colour to a pale one, or covering nicotine and water stains, takes more coats and a proper primer. That is preparation. It belongs in the quote, not as an extra invented at the end.
