Ballinamallard sits on the river between Irvinestown and Enniskillen, about half an hour from Omagh. It is a village of bungalows and family houses, and the decorating is usually a living room, a hall and stairs, or a whole bungalow that has gone tired, rather than a huge one-off project.

The local caution is moisture. Older ground-floor walls near the river can hold damp even when the room smells fine. Wallpaper will hide that for a short time and then stain or peel. Martin is not a damp-proofing firm and he will not sell you a paper to cover a wet wall. If the plaster is cold and marked, the honest answer may be to leave the paper off until the cause is dealt with, and to paint only once the wall is fit.

Where the walls are dry, the work is the same as anywhere on the Fermanagh road: fill what needs filling, paint the woodwork as well as the walls, and hang paper where you actually want a pattern. The village is part of the regular run south, not a once-a-year trip.
