Painter and decorator in Omagh

MC Decorating is based in the town. Halls, stairs, full rooms and outside work for houses across Omagh, with smaller jobs welcome because the travel is not the job.

Martin Kelly lives and works from Omagh, so this is the centre of the round rather than a town he visits. The houses are the ordinary mix of the county town: older terraces and semis through Campsie, Kevlin, the Hospital Road, the Dublin Road and the Gortin Road, and newer estates where the plaster is still moving and the first proper decoration is overdue.

The job that comes up most is the hall, stairs and landing. It is the part of the house every visitor sees, and it takes the knocks. Wallpaper above a dado, woodwork that has gone yellow, and spindles that have never had a clean finish are the usual brief. He also paints single rooms, whole interiors, and the making-good that has to happen before colour will sit flat. Ceilings with old filler spots are common in town houses that have been patched over the years.

On the edge of town, towards the Sperrins, outside walls take more weather. Exterior work waits for a dry spell. If the wall is still holding rain, it does not get a coat that week. That is as true on the Gortin side as it is further out in the glen.

Because he is already in Omagh, a bedroom, a cloakroom or a stairs is straightforward to price. Describe the rooms and he will tell you whether it is a short job or a week. Across the rest of Tyrone and Fermanagh he is happy to travel, and he also takes work on either side of the border when it suits. Omagh is simply where the van starts.
